Shaw Ranch

The Sky Is Everywhere

Shaw Ranch is a large, elevated property whose green-and-gold acreage descends from a ridge toward Clover. More than a backdrop, it is connected to Toby Shaw’s daily life and becomes the setting for a frank exchange about his lost future with Bailey and his complicated closeness to Lennie Walker.

Setting and Layout

The ranch presides over Clover: its land stretches from the ridge down toward town, making it a defining feature of the local landscape. At the stables, Lennie finds Toby removing the saddle from a beautiful black mare. The scene also opens onto the surrounding fields, whose golden meadows remain in view while the two speak beside Toby’s truck.

Toby Shaw’s Connection to the Ranch

The ranch is part of Toby’s routine. When Gram explains that she asked him to repair the trellising around her garden, she says he would come by after finishing at the ranch. His presence there is thus linked both to his own obligations and to his continued practical support for Gram’s family.

A Place for Candor and Return

Lennie goes through the iron gate and approaches Toby in the stables. After he finishes, they get into his truck; although the Clover cemetery is close enough to reach on foot, Toby pauses before starting the engine and talks while looking across the meadows. He recalls envying the closeness between Lennie and Bailey, and says he had looked forward to marrying Bailey, having their baby, and becoming part of the family. He had wanted to help Lennie through her grief, but that care and their shared sense of understanding became, in his words, too close and confused. Lennie answers that Toby was the only person who could find her when she was lost in grief, and that she does not know what she would have done without him. The ranch setting therefore holds both the physical trace of Toby’s life and a turning point toward acknowledging what their intimacy meant.
